Happy Jack

Happy Jack Squirrel is the cheeriest, most bushy-tailed rascal in the Green Forest, but even the jolliest creatures have their flaws. When Happy Jack discovers a magnificent hickory tree bursting with nuts, his heart swells with greedy joy and he decides every single nut will be his and his alone. His cousin Chatterer the Red Squirrel and Striped Chipmunk have other ideas, and their comical quarrel sends those precious nuts tumbling to the ground, embroiling all three in chaos. But Happy Jack's winter stockpile becomes the least of his worries when he wakes one morning to the scent of something foul in the air: Shadow the Weasel is hunting, and Happy Jack finds himself fleeing through the forest, using every trick he knows to escape his nightmare made flesh. Burgess weaves gentle lessons about generosity, cooperation, and the consequences of selfishness into a story that never feels didactic, letting Happy Jack's own misadventures do the teaching. More than a century later, this book endures because it captures something timeless: the beauty and danger of the natural world, the messiness of family, and the quiet wisdom hidden in a small creature's quest to survive.
