Handbook of Violin Playing

A window into the drawing rooms and conservatories of 1900, where young violinists learned their craft from men who had studied with the last of the old masters. Carl Schroeder's handbook preserves that moment before recorded music changed everything, offering instruction rooted in generations of accumulated wisdom. The book traces the violin's lineage from ancient lyres through the legendary workshops of Gaspard Duiffopruggar to the golden age of Stradivari and Guarnerius, then unfolds the instrument's anatomy with the care of a luthier: the wood, the varnish, the physics of sound. What follows is technique rendered with Victorian precision: bow grip, finger placement, the cultivation of tone. But this is more than a method book. It is a time capsule of Edwardian musical culture, when learning violin meant joining a tradition stretching back centuries. For modern players curious about how their artform was taught before recordings, before YouTube tutorials, this handbook offers something rarer than tips: a sense of lineage.
