Hänsel and Gretel: A Fairy Opera in Three Acts

Engelbert Humperdinck's 1893 masterpiece proves that opera can be as tender as a lullaby and as thrilling as a nightmare. Based on the Brothers Grimm's darkest fairy tale, it follows Hänsel and Gretel, two hungry children abandoned in a forest teeming with danger and magic, who must confront a witch who bakes children in her oven. Yet the opera's heart beats warm: Humperdinck fuses the simplicity of German folk songs with the psychological depth of Wagner, creating a score where the children's evening prayer becomes one of music's most achingly beautiful moments. The result is a fairy-tale opera that doesn't condescend to its young characters or its audience. When it premiered, Richard Strauss conducted and declared it "a masterpiece of the highest quality." In 1923, it became the first complete opera broadcast on radio. These milestones hint at its true legacy: the rare work that bridges classical tradition and modern accessibility. It is dark enough to chill, sweet enough to heal. For anyone who remembers being small and lost in a world that felt too large.
