H.m.i.: Some Passages in the Life of One of H.m. Inspectors of Schools

In 1908, E. M. Sneyd-Kynnersley looked back on three decades as one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, and what he found was comedy, friction, and quietly profound human encounter. The son of a civil servant who first glimpsed his future self at age twelve, Sneyd-Kynnersley spent his career walking into classrooms across North Wales and beyond, tasked with evaluating teachers, enforcing new laws, and mediating between distant bureaucrats and local communities who wanted nothing to do with either. This memoir captures that peculiar tension: the inspector as stranger, arriving with forms and standards to places where schoolroom lessons still compete with farming seasons and local dialect. Sneyd-Kynnersley writes with dry humor about the resistant headmasters, the children who knew more than their examiners, the inspectorship's peculiar blend of authority and vulnerability. It's a period piece, yes, but one that reveals how little has changed: the anxiety of being observed, the gap between policy and practice, the small dramas of education itself. For readers curious about how modern schooling found its footing, or anyone who remembers a teacher who defied the system, this is an intimate dispatch from the front lines of early twentieth-century Britain.
