Greek and Roman Ghost Stories

The ancient Greeks and Romans were haunted by their dead. Long before Gothic novels gave us creaking manor houses and draped figures, the classical world believed the dead walked among the living constantly, driven by unfinished business, improper burial, or simple restlessness. This 1912 collection gathers the most vivid accounts from Greek literature, Roman sources, and ancient scholarship, revealing a civilization obsessed with what happened after death. Here you'll find the specters that appeared to soldiers on battlefields, the spirits of the unburied who demanded proper rites, ghosts seeking vengeance or justice, and the dark art of necromancy itself. Collison-Morley draws on ancient texts ranging from Homer to Plutarch, presenting not mere entertainment but a window into how Romans and Greeks understood mortality, honor, and the thin barrier between life and death. The ghosts that haunt these pages are not the draped wailers of later horror, but complex beings with real demands on the living. What makes this collection endure is its revelation that our modern ghost stories have deep roots. The anxieties that drive a specter to return are the same: unfinished business, unpaid debts, unmourned deaths.
