Graham's Magazine, Vol. XXXVI, No. 5, May 1850

A window into mid-19th century American intellectual life, this May 1850 issue of Graham's Magazine offers a rich snapshot of what educated readers valued: rigorous literary criticism, evocative poetry, and cultural commentary that shaped the era's understanding of art and letters. The centerpiece is a substantial essay analyzing Hamlet through the lens of German scholar Ulrici, arguing that every Shakespeare play embodies a fundamental moral idea, and using the Danish prince's famed hesitation to explore themes of discretion, character, and the weights of action and restraint. Beyond the Bard, readers will find poetry reflecting contemporary preoccupations, essays on the visual arts, and personal reflections that reveal the minds of 1850s Americans grappling with questions of culture, morality, and beauty. This is not mere nostalgia; it is a record of serious people attempting to understand themselves through literature, and it remains fascinating for anyone curious about how Victorians read Shakespeare.
