Goose Creek Folks: A Story of the Kentucky Mountains

When Talitha and Martin Coyle climb down from the ridge after a year of schooling, Goose Creek hasn't changed. The same mist hangs over the holler. The same neighbors gather at the spring to discuss weather and kin. But the Coyle children have learned things their mountain folk never taught them: to want more, to see differently, to feel the distance between what they now know and where they came from. Florence Lilian Bush writes with tender precision about what happens when education becomes a kind of exile, when learning to read makes you see your own people in a new light. This is not a story of dramatic rebellion or easy judgment. It is quieter than that, sadder. It asks what we owe to the places that form us, and whether we can ever truly go back to who we were before we left. For readers who love regional American fiction, who know the particular grief of outgrowing home.
