Gleaner Tales

These are the stories Canada told itself about its own becoming. Written in 1895, Gleaner Tales gathers the raw, untamed memory of a young nation looking back at its first settlers, men and women who crossed an ocean to carve homes from wilderness. Through Lieutenant Morton and his Indigenous guide Hemlock, Robert Sellar dramatizes the collision of worlds that defined the Canadian frontier: the brutal mathematics of survival, the uneasy alliances between British newcomers and the peoples who already knew the land, and the silent arithmetic of who gets to tell the story. These are not nostalgic vignettes. They pulse with the violence of settlement, the loneliness of the pioneer, and the strange partnerships that emerged when European ambition met Indigenous knowledge. Sellar writes with the urgency of someone who knew these tales were already fading, already being polished into myth. A window into how late-Victorian Canadians understood their own origins, and a reminder that every national story is assembled from many voices, not all of them heard equally.
