German Problems and Personalities

In 1912, as Europe sleepwalked toward catastrophe, Belgian scholar Charles Sarolea wrote this piercing analysis of the German nation. Based on years of observation and travel through Germany, Sarolea dissects the contradictions at the heart of the Empire: the tension between Prussian militarism and the more liberal, artistic cultures of the South and West; the aggressive expansionism embodied in "Drang nach Osten"; and the ideological influences of Bismarck and Nietzsche on the German psyche. He sees clearly what many of his contemporaries refused to acknowledge: that Germany, as then configured, was heading toward an inevitable clash with the rest of Europe. This is not distant history but contemporary witness, written by a man watching a civilization prepare to tear itself and the continent apart. The book endures because it captures, with remarkable clarity, the intellectual and political currents that drove Europe into war. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the origins of the First World War from a contemporary voice who saw it coming.
