German Barbarism: A Neutral's Indictment

Published in 1916 at the height of the First World War, this incendiary polemic offers a stark, unapologetic indictment of German military conduct as witnessed by a Greek neutral with evident sympathy for France. Léon Maccas marshals accounts of civilian casualties, prisoner mistreatment, and the deployment of prohibited weapons to argue that Germany has deliberately abandoned the codes of civilized warfare embraced by other nations. The book pulses with moral urgency and outrage, its every page shaped by the conviction that the conflict then raging represents not merely a military struggle but a fundamental clash between barbarism and humanity. Maccas frames his analysis as a duty: to document, to accuse, and to ensure the historical record reflects what he saw as the systematic brutality of German warfare. For modern readers, the work stands as a fascinating primary document of wartime propaganda and perception, revealing how the war was understood and contested by its contemporary observers. It is not history as we would write it today, but history as it was lived and argued in 1916.
