George Whitefield: A Biography, with Special Reference to His Labors in America

George Whitefield could hold eighty thousand people in silent attention with nothing but his voice in an open field. He was perhaps the most magnetic preacher in English-speaking history, and this mid-19th century biography captures the full arc of his extraordinary life - from his troubled youth in Gloucester, through his ordination at Oxford where he briefly mentored John Wesley, to his meteoric rise as the voice of the Great Awakening that transformed eighteenth-century America and England. Joseph Belcher meticulously documents Whitefield's revolutionary methods: his theatrical oratory, his willingness to preach to slaves and outcasts, his founding of the Bethesda Orphanage in Georgia, and his eventual split from Wesley over questions of divine grace. The biography reveals both the man and his era: a time when religion had grown formal and lifeless, and one voice rose to make it visceral and urgent again. For readers interested in the roots of American evangelicalism, the psychology of charisma, or simply a remarkable life lived at full intensity, this remains a compelling window into how revivals begin.
