George Cruikshank

George Cruikshank lived to witness the entire transformation of English society, from the Regency's decadence through the Industrial Revolution's upheaval to the high Victorian age. He drew it all. W.H. Chesson's critical examination, written in the late 19th century, traces the arc of this extraordinary career: the savage political cartoons that made ministers squirm, the book illustrations that gave Dickens's early works their unforgettable visual presence, and the vast satirical corpus that documented every shade of English life. Chesson situates Cruikshank within the great tradition of English caricature, placing him alongside Hogarth and Gillray, while examining how his style evolved across six decades of relentless output. The book offers both biography and critical analysis, exploring Cruikshank's relationships with literary figures like Thackeray and his paradoxical legacy as an artist who both celebrated and savaged his era. For anyone interested in the visual culture of the 19th century, this is essential reading.
