General History of Connecticut, from Its First Settlement Under George Fenwick…

A landmark historical document from the chaos of the American Revolution, Samuel Peters' General History of Connecticut stands as one of the earliest comprehensive accounts of the colony's founding and development. Written by a Connecticut-born clergyman who would eventually align with the Loyalist cause, the work traces Connecticut's evolution from its tentative first settlements under George Fenwick through the volatile years leading to independence. Peters draws upon personal recollection, local records, and oral tradition to construct a narrative that is part chronicle, part argument about the colony's identity and purpose. The result is an indispensable window into 18th-century New England, revealing the complex interplay of religious conviction, political ambition, and social organization that shaped one of America's most distinctive colonies. For readers interested in primary sources and the formation of American regional identity, Peters' history offers both detailed information and the particular perspective of a man watching his world unravel.
