Gaza: A City of Many Battles (from the Family of Noah to the Present Day)

Theodore Edward Dowling arrived in Gaza in the spring of 1912, when the city still hummed beneath Ottoman rule and the modern upheavals of the twentieth century lay just over the horizon. This book is the record of that visit and the years of scholarly inquiry that preceded it: a journey through millennia of conquest, faith, and strategic desperation that made one small stretch of Mediterranean coast indispensable to empires. Dowling walks readers from the biblical references that first cemented Gaza's fame (Samson's final act, the Philistine kingdoms, the steps of Paul) through the grinding conflicts of the Crusades and the passage of Napoleon in 1799, drawing on conversations with local clergy and scholars who preserved memories the maps could not capture. The result is neither a comprehensive modern history nor a travelogue, but something rarer: a portrait of Gaza as seen through the particular lens of British imperial scholarship on the eve of the First World War, when the city's fate still rested in hands that would soon be severed from it. For readers interested in how earlier generations understood the ancient world, or in the layered ways history accrues around a single place, this remains a fascinating artifact.
