Garden-Craft Old and New

In an age of machine-made landscapes, John Dando Sedding made a passionate case for the garden as sanctuary, arguing that true garden craft fuses human artistry with nature's wild beauty. Written in 1891, this treatise wanders through the philosophical foundations of what separates a mere plot of ground from a living work of art. Sedding contrasts the revival of old-fashioned gardening techniques against the sterile precision of modern landscaping, defending the intimate, memory-laden garden against the tyranny of the uniform and the predictable. He probes the fundamental question: what exactly is a garden? And answers that it reflects man's love for beauty, serving as an intimate place where artistic intent merges with nature's innate rhythms. This is not a practical how-to guide but a meditation on why we garden at all, and what our gardens say about us.
