Gambia

Here is a Victorian philatelist's bible, the first serious attempt to catalog the postal history of Britain's oldest West African colony. Melville, writing in 1882 when Gambia was still finding its footing as a Crown colony, meticulously documents every stamp issued from the landmark Cameo issue of 1869 through the subsequent decades of colonial administration. You will find no sweeping narrative here, but something more valuable: the contemporary record of what these stamps looked like, how they were printed, which watermarks appeared, and how collectors then understood their rarity. For modern philatelists handling a Gambia 4d olive-green or staring at a 1s greenish-black, Melville provides the foundation. This is primary source material, the original lens through which the hobby made sense of Gambia's postal output. It remains essential reading for anyone serious about British West African philately.
