In medieval Normandy, a twelve-year-old peasant boy named Gabriel Viaud has his life transformed by the simplest of opportunities: a job as a color-grinder at St. Martin's Abbey. When Brother Stephen decides to break with convention and paint the book's borders with real wildflowers from the meadow that was once Gabriel's home, the boy sees his chance.
