What happens when you take the grandeur of Homeric epic and apply it to a pond-side squabble? You get this gloriously absurd ancient parody, a vicious miniature war told with complete stylistic seriousness. The frogs and mice clash over nothing and everything, their petty battles narrated in the elevated diction of genuine heroism, complete with funeral rites, divine intervention, and heroic speeches about honor. It's the oldest practical joke in Western literature: a straight-faced send-up of the epic genre itself, written sometime in the first century BCE and once mistakenly attributed to Homer himself. This edition presents two German adaptations that approach the material quite differently. Franz Xaver Weinzierl's 1804 translation preserves the classical hexameter and archaic tone, offering readers a faithful rendering of the original's mock-heroic machinery. Victor Blüthen's 1878 version takes bolder liberties, recasting the conflict in the rhythm of traditional German children's rhymes while maintaining the satirical spark. Fedor Flinzer's illustrations add visual wit to the enterprise. Together, these versions demonstrate how a 2,000-year-old joke still lands, no matter the language.
