Lucy A. Delaney

Biographies, History - American

From the Darkness Cometh the Light is not Lucy's story alone, it is her mother's. Polly Berry made a vow in bondage: she would escape, and she would free her children. What follows is a forty-year fight against a system built to destroy Black families, told through the eyes of a daughter who watched her mother refuse to be broken. Lucy Ann Delaney was kidnapped at eight years old and sold into slavery, separated from her mother Polly, who remained enslaved on another plantation. But Polly was not like the others. She escaped twice, fought through the courts, and waged a legal battle to win her daughter's freedom after Lucy was wrongfully imprisoned. The narrative does not dwell on the horrors of slavery the way abolitionist accounts often did. Instead, Delaney, writing in 1891, insists on showing the strength, cunning, and spiritual conviction of those who survived it. She continues her story past emancipation: through the death of her first husband, the raising of her four children, and her own political engagement as a Black woman claiming her place in American democracy. This is a narrative of witness and triumph. It is for readers who understand that freedom was not given but taken, that mothers held families together with nothing but will, and that the fight for dignity is itself a form of resistance.
