From Midshipman to Field Marshal

Sir Evelyn Wood rose from HMS Euryalus's gunroom to the highest ranks of the British Empire's military, and in this 1906 memoir he tells the story of that extraordinary ascent. A young midshipman at 13, he witnessed the Charge of the Light Brigade from the valley floor during the Crimean War, later serving in the turbulent campaigns of India and South Africa where empire was forged in blood and blunder. This is not a dry military history but a firsthand account of nineteenth-century warfare: its horrors, its absurdities, and the peculiar code of honor that bound officers together across continents. Wood writes with the casual brutality of a man who survived what he describes, offering vivid sketches of fellow officers, battlefield follies, and the slow, often arbitrary machinery of promotion. For readers drawn to primary sources from the heyday of the British Empire, or those who loved Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, this memoir offers the real thing: a soldier's eye view of how wars were actually fought and careers made.
