From Isolation to Leadership, Revised: A Review of American Foreign Policy

Written in 1918 as the Great War rages in Europe and America stands at a crossroads, this book captures a pivotal moment in the nation's identity crisis. John Holladay Latané, writing in the aftermath of global conflict, traces how the United States navigated from Washington's farewell advice to Jefferson's embargo, through the Monroe Doctrine's bold declaration of hemispheric independence, toward the precipice of world leadership. The book dissects a central paradox: how could a nation so deeply skeptical of European entanglement become indispensable to international order? Latané argues that American isolationism was never truly isolation but rather a strategic patience, a waiting game until the republic grew strong enough toproject its power. This revised edition offers not mere historical recounting but a primer on how great powers rationalize their rise. For readers seeking to understand the intellectual foundations of America's twentieth-century ascendancy, or those tracing the roots of modern debates about internationalism versus nationalism, Latané's analysis remains strikingly relevant.
