From Crow-Scaring to Westminster: An Autobiography

What happens when a child who scares crows from fields becomes a voice in the halls of power? George Edwards lived that journey, and his autobiography is a testament to what persistence looks like when the odds are crushing. Born into dire poverty in rural Norfolk, Edwards began working at six years old, laboring long hours in fields that offered his family nothing but subsistence. His father, returning from military service, faced the same brutal economics that trapped all agricultural laborers: impossible working conditions, starvation wages, and a social order that considered them expendable. Yet young George learned to read, found mentors, and discovered a fury at injustice that would shape his entire life. The book follows his transformation from farm worker to union organizer to Member of Parliament, a path that seemed impossible in the rigid class structures of Victorian England. Edwards writes with clear-eyed anger about the poverty that defined rural childhoods and with tactical precision about the organizing that eventually won concessions for workers. This is history from below, written by a man who never forgot where he came from.
