Franklin: A Sketch
1767

He was born the fifteenth of seventeen children in a Boston candlemaker's shop. He died an international celebrity, the only Founding Father to sign all four of the major documents that created the United States. John Bigelow's 1874 biography traces this improbable arc, following Franklin from his apprenticeship in a printing house to his emergence as the century's most fascinating American. We see the scientist experimenting with electricity, the printer filling Poor Richard's Almanack with wit that still lands four centuries later, and the diplomat charmed into securing French support that made American independence possible. Bigelow captures what makes Franklin endlessly renewable: not saintly reverence but the particular American alchemy of curiosity, practical wisdom, and relentless self-improvement. This is biography as portrait of a man who refused to be limited by his origins, who understood that genius is mostly just showing up and paying attention. For anyone curious about where the American experiment actually began, this is the front row seat.

“In reality, there is, perhaps, no one of our natural passions so hard to subdue as pride. Disguise it, struggle with it, beat it down, stifle it, mortify it as much as one pleases, it is still alive, and will every now and then peep out and show itself; you will see it, perhaps, often in this history; for, even if I could conceive that I had compleatly overcome it, I should probably be proud of my humility.””

“My Parents had early given me religious Impressions, and brought me through my Childhood piously in the Dissenting Way. But I was scarce 15 when, after doubting by turns of several Points as I found them disputed in the different Books I read, . Some Books against Deism fell into my Hands; they were said to be the Substance of Sermons preached at Boyle's Lectures. It happened that they wrought an Effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them: For the Arguments of the Deists which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much Stronger than the Refutations. .[]””
