Fourth Reader: The Alexandra Readers

A time capsule of early 20th century Canadian education, this reader was the standard text for fourth graders in Alberta and Saskatchewan schools in 1915. Within its worn pages live the poems, stories, and historical accounts that shaped an entire generation of young Canadians: the stirring "Dominion Hymn" expressing national pride and unity, "The Moonlight Sonata" recounting Beethoven's encounter with a blind girl and the birth of his famous composition, and a rich variety of folk tales and historical narratives designed to instill courage, compassion, and love of language. Each selection was chosen not merely to teach reading, but to form character. This is education as it once existed: purposeful, morally grounded, and unapologetically aimed at building both literacy and citizenship. For historians, educators, and anyone curious about what Canadian children once read at their desks, this reader opens a window onto a vanished world of learning.
