Four Hundred Humorous Illustrations: With Portrait and Biographical Sketch

Victorian Britain, dissected with ink and wit. This 1868 collection presents four hundred satirical illustrations that poke fun at the absurdities of British society - the pretensions of the upper classes, the anxieties of the middle class, and the small humiliations of daily life. Each drawing is a small time machine: the fashions, the furniture, the rigid social rituals all rendered with an artist's keen eye for the ridiculous. The humor remains surprisingly fresh. These aren't dusty relics - they're sharp observations about human nature that haven't aged a day. Whether depicting a stuffy dinner party, a disastrous sporting attempt, or the comical struggles of courtship, the illustrations reveal a Victorian world that was already laughing at itself. For readers interested in social history, visual culture, or simply brilliant cartooning, this collection offers both entertainment and insight. It captures a moment when the British were inventing modern satire - and proving that the things we find absurd about ourselves never really change.
