Fort Robinson: Outpost on the Plains

In the brutal March chill of 1874, nine hundred forty-nine soldiers pushed toward Red Cloud's agency, knowing that a single careless gunshot could ignite open war on the Plains. This is the story of Fort Robinson, the remote army outpost that became a flashpoint between expanding American power and Native resistance. Roger T. Grange, drawing on military records and contemporary accounts, traces the fort's turbulent early years when it served as both military installation and diplomatic nerve center, where officers balanced a fragile peace against the ever-present threat of violence. The narrative captures the strategic calculations and human tensions that shaped this crucial moment in Plains history, revealing how decisions made at this remote post rippled across tribal territories and set the stage for the conflicts to come. For readers drawn to the American West's raw historical moments, this account offers an intimate view of the soldiers, agents, and chiefs whose choices determined a region's fate.
