For the Sake of the Soldier: Voluntary Work of Brisbane Women

In the winter of 1915, as Australia mobilized for a war that would reshape the nation, Rita Macleod sat down to document something that risked being forgotten: the extraordinary voluntary efforts of Brisbane women supporting soldiers in the trenches, hospitals, and camps. This is not history written later, but history captured in the moment, airst by a participant-observer who understood that these efforts deserved permanent record. Macleod chronicles the Red Cross Society, the Queensland Soldiers' Comforts Fund, and countless informal networks of women who knitted garments, organized fundraising events, and provided comforts to soldiers far from home. She captures the texture of wartime Brisbane, the urgency and grief and stubborn community spirit that animated these women from all walks of life. The book functions as both urgent wartime testimony and invaluable primary source, preserving the voices and labor of women whose contributions often disappeared from official narratives. For readers interested in Australian history, women's studies, or the documentary traditions of wartime, this volume offers an intimate window into how ordinary women navigated extraordinary times, their work immortalized by someone who lived it.
