Fishy-Winkle

Three children flee their seaside home for a day of adventure, and what they find is stranger than any mischief they could have imagined. When the O'Hara kids discover a mer-baby stranded in a tide pool, their plans of escape become something far more magical: a whirling, splashing friendship with Fishy-Winkle, a creature of the deep who longs to return home but cannot, not until the tide turns again. Together they explore rock pools teeming with wonder, share a picnic on the sand, and encounter the impossibly named Haddock-Cat in this sun-sparkled escapade from 1903. Yet the day must end, as days do, and their mother awaits with more patience than the children deserve. The forgiveness that follows isn't earned easily, but it arrives, as true forgiveness does, complete with warmth and without fanfare. Part of the beloved Dumpy Books series, this is vintage whimsy: a small, perfectly formed tale of childhood's ordinary rebellions and extraordinary discoveries.
