Fires of Driftwood

Isabel Ecclestone Mackay wrote from the edge of the continent, and her poetry carries that liminal weight. Fires of Driftwood gathers poems that move between the physical world - the docks and gardens of Vancouver, the vast Canadian landscape - and something more elusive, the territory where memory meets mystery. Mackay's work weaves intimate moments of love and loss through strands of folklore and mysticism, creating verses that feel both deeply personal and connected to something ancient. Her language is sensory and precise, capturing light on water, the turning of seasons, the ache of absence. These are poems written by someone who understood that beauty and sorrow are not opposites but companions. The collection offers readers who appreciate lyrical poetry a window into an important early Canadian voice, one who helped shape the country's literary landscape in the decades before her death in 1928.
