Poetry

Translated by Florence Wheelock Ayscough

Before there was a Western canon of Chinese poetry, there was this collection. Published in 1921, Fir-Flower Tablets introduced English readers to the luminous world of classical Chinese verse, primarily from the T'ang Dynasty, through the unlikely collaboration of Amy Lowell, the radical Imagist poet, and Florence Ayscough, a scholar who had spent years in China. Together, they pursued something radical for their era: translations that honored the original images, the breath, the silence between lines, rather than forcing Chinese poetry into Western metrical conventions. The collection centers on poets like Li T'ai-po (Li Bai), whose verses about moonlit rivers, flying birds, and the ache of separation became gateway drugs to an entire literary tradition. Lowell's preface is itself a small masterpiece, a meditation on why poetry functions differently in Chinese culture, where verse was not ornament but necessity, the way breath is necessary. For readers who have never encountered the T'ang poets, this remains a remarkable entry point: not the most academically rigorous translation, perhaps, but one that captures what made these poems feel like discovering fire.
