Fifty Years a Detective: 35 Real Detective Stories

Published in 1912, this is the memoir of a man who spent five decades chasing criminals across the American rail network. Thomas Furlong was not a police detective but a railroad detective, employed by the Missouri Pacific Railway to protect their cargo and catch the thieves, con artists, and grifters who preyed on trains and stations. A Civil War veteran who rose to become Chief of the Secret Service, Furlong claims to be the oldest detective in continuous service in either America or Europe. The thirty-five stories here are drawn from real cases, some of which never made newspapers because his corporate employers hired him to solve problems, not to entertain journalists. Others received coverage but only told the public what authorities permitted. Furlong reveals the inside work: how clues were found, how evidence was gathered, how criminals were caught. The book offers a window into a vanished America where detectives rode trains, bribes bought information, and justice moved at the speed of railroad schedules. For readers who love true crime, American history, or the early days of investigation, this is a genuine artifact from the era when detectives were still forging their craft in the shadows of the industrial age.
