Fifty Famous Fables

Fifty animal tales, each one a little machine for teaching truth. McMurry gathered fables that have traveled through centuries, stories where the fox is clever, the lion is proud, the tortoise is patient, and recast them for young readers hungry for their first encounters with wisdom dressed in fur and feather. The Tortoise and the Ducks shows what happens when desire outpaces judgment. The Lion and the Mouse proves that might and weakness are not fixed positions. A crow forgets herself at a cheese; a donkey stumbles into wisdom. Each story condenses a lesson into narrative form, teaching children that actions have consequences, that kindness boomerangs back, that pride precedes a fall. These are not lectures. They are parables, entertainments that slip their moral payload past a child's defenses and into their understanding. For young readers discovering that books can teach them something true about living, and for parents looking for stories that entertains while it instructs.
