Farmer Bluff's Dog Blazer: Or, at the Eleventh Hour

In the tradition of late Victorian children's adventure stories comes this lesser-known gem about a boy who discovers that defying his father's rules might be the first step toward understanding what truly matters. Dick Crozier has just moved to the countryside with his family, and the boundaries his father sets feel like prisons. But when he slips away to explore the rural landscape around him, he finds something far more interesting than forbidden adventures: the estate of Farmer Bluff, a rough-hewn bailiff whose family and their magnificent dog, Blazer, operate by different rules entirely. What unfolds is a story about the fragile negotiations between childhood desire and parental authority, between the insularity of class consciousness and the possibility of genuine connection. Dick must navigate not only the physical landscape of his new home but its social hierarchies, finding unlikely friendship with a disabled boy named Hal and learning that compassion requires abandoning the comfortable assumptions of his own position. The "eleventh hour" in the title hints at the story's quiet urgency, a sense that some choices, once made, cannot be taken back.
