Famous Pets of Famous People

What happens when you pull back the curtain on history's most celebrated figures? Eleanor Lewis's 1892 collection peels back the polished monuments and marble statues to reveal the intimate world of famous people's animal companions. We meet Sir Walter Scott and his beloved dogs Camp and Maida, whose loyalty comforted him through hardship. We glimpse royal households and literary salons populated by creatures who offered something no human court could: unconditional presence. Lewis writes with earnest Victorian sentimentality, arguing that animals revealed their famous owners' truest selves. The prose is period purple, the research earnest, the affection unmistakable. Whether you find this charming or quaint probably depends on how much you enjoy watching legends unbend in the company of creatures who didn't care they were famous.
