Fairy Tales from South Africa

Before television, before radio, before books, there were fires in the African night and voices weaving magic into darkness. This 1908 collection gathers folk tales from the Swazi, Zulu, Shangani, and Suto peoples, preserving stories that had lived only in memory and utterance until colonial collectors began writing them down. Here you'll meet Setuli, born deaf and mute yet granted extraordinary powers by a fairy, and a prince who recovers his father's stolen cattle through a song of such beauty it bends even enemies to mercy. There are talking animals, cunning ogres, enchanted objects that transform lives, and heroes who win not through strength alone but through wit and kindness. These are not European fairy tales in African dress. They are something older and stranger, rooted in customs and cosmology that European readers had no framework to understand. The introduction describes how such stories were once told in secret, guarded with ritual, passed from elder to child around evening fires. A century later, they remain windows into another imagination.
