Fairy Tales for Workers' Children

These are not your grandmother's fairy tales. Written in the early 1920s by Austrian socialist Hermynia Zur Mühlen, this collection reimagines the genre for a new audience: the children of workers. Here, princesses learn that true magic lies in solidarity, and peasants discover that the real enchantment is what they can accomplish together. Zur Mühlen was no ordinary children's author. A committed socialist and translator of Upton Lewis, she understood that fairy tales had always been about power, and her stories retain the form children love: quests, transformations, wicked villains, and happy endings. But the villains are factory owners and greedy landlords, and the happy endings come not from magic wands but from workers uniting for fair treatment. The tales don't preach; they enchant. A boy befriends the creatures of the field and learns that nature itself takes sides with those who labor. A clever servant girl outwits the rich through quiet, principled defiance. These are stories that tell children their struggles are real, their anger is justified, and their collective action can transform the world.
