Facts for the People of the Free States

Published in the turbulent years before the Civil War, this abolitionist pamphlet delivers an audacious message to the free states: you owe nothing to slave catchers, and everything to the enslaved. Drawing on a fiery 1846 speech by Congressman J.R. Giddings, the text makes the radical argument that the Constitution imposed no duty on free states to return fugitive slaves. But it goes further still, declaring that an enslaved person defending their liberty against their master possesses the same right to self-defense as any citizen and that those who resist deserve not condemnation but admiration as heroes. The pamphlet compiles testimony, legal reasoning, and moral argument to demonstrate that the institution of slavery is not merely economically or politically inconvenient, but an abomination that contradicts every principle upon which the republic was founded. It challenges readers in the North to examine their own complicity and to recognize that neutrality in the face of bondage is itself a form of moral failure.
