Experiences of a Dug-Out, 1914-1918

Sir Charles Callwell was a retired officer dragged back into the British war machine in 1914. What he found there horrified him. This memoir, written with the benefit of hindsight but still raw with frustration, pulls back the curtain on the War Office's catastrophic early years: the hubris, the miscommunication, the comfortable assumptions that crumbled when modern warfare began. Callwell had studied the German army firsthand before the war. He knew what they were capable of. Watching his own side stumble toward the Somme while senior commanders operated on theories that belonged to a different century, he kept detailed notes and sharper opinions. The book traces his journey through the military's adapting nightmare: logistics that couldn't keep pace, decisions made too slowly or not at all, a system designed for small wars that suddenly faced industrialized slaughter. It's not a soldier's memoir of trenches. It's something rarer: an officer's account of how the war was managed, and how badly.
