Experience of a Confederate States Prisoner: Being an Ephemeris Regularly Kept by an Officer of the Confederate States Army

This is not a general's memoir or a history of battles. It is the intimate, diary-like account of one Confederate officer's descent into captivity, written in the immediate aftermath of his capture at McDowell in May 1862. Beckwith West records the chaos of retreat from Front Royal, the physical torment of wounds compounded by inadequate care, and the strange, humane dynamics that emerge when enemies are forced into close quarters. What distinguishes this account is its refusal to generalize: West captures specific faces, specific kindnesses from local townsfolk who smuggled food to Confederate prisoners, specific moments of connection with Union guards who were also, in their own way, trapped by the machinery of war. The prose is plain, unadorned, exactly what one would expect from a man writing by candlelight in a prison camp, trying to preserve something before it vanished. For readers seeking the Civil War's human texture rather than its grand strategies, this is an invaluable artifact: a voice from inside the cage, recording what it felt like to wait, to suffer, and to survive.
