Excursions in Victorian Bibliography

There is a particular thrill in holding a first edition, feeling the weight of paper that someone in 1870 held, seeing the imprint of a long-vanished publisher, knowing that only a few hundred copies existed and fewer still survived. This is the world Michael Sadleir opens for us in 1922, written with the passion of a man who has spent decades in the auction houses and bookshops of London, tracking down the treasures of Victorian publishing. Part memoir, part practical guide, this book demystifies the peculiar alchemy that makes certain Victorian volumes desirable: the points of issue, the binding variations, the publisher's quirks that separate a five-pound book from a five-hundred-pound one. Sadleir writes with reverence for authors like Anthony Trollope and Wilkie Collins, treating their works not merely as literature but as physical objects worthy of scholarly attention. Whether you are a novice bibliophile wandering into your first rare book shop or an experienced collector refining your knowledge, this remains a foundational text in the mythology of book collecting.
