Estudios Históricos Del Reinado De Felipe II

Fernández Duro's masterful 19th-century study dissects one of the most humiliating military disasters of Philip II's reign: the catastrophic expedition to the island of Gelves in 1560. What begins as a detailed geographical and historical prologue soon transforms into a searing account of hubris, poor planning, and institutional failure. The narrative follows the ill-fated landing of Spanish forces, the collapse of command, and the eventual slaughter by superior Turkish forces, with Don Álvaro de Sande left to lead a desperate final defense. Fernández Duro sparely documents the collapse of what should have been a routine occupation, revealing the rot within Spain's military apparatus at the height of its imperial pretensions. This is not celebratory history but forensic autopsy of defeat, examining how logistical failures, rivalries among commanders, and fundamental miscalculation combined to produce a disaster that foreshadowed the slower decline of Spanish hegemony. For readers interested in early modern military history, the mechanics of empire, or the Spanish perspective on their own golden age's unraveling, this remains a foundational and unflinching work.
