Essay on the Literature of the Mexican War

Written in 1882, this sharp critical essay surveys the surprisingly thin body of literature produced about America's most controversial war. W.T. Lawson laments that the Mexican War (1846-1848), for all its historical weight and territorial consequence, has failed to inspire great literary treatment. He evaluates military histories by General Ripley and Colonel Benton, praises the poetry of Theodore O'Hara, and champions James Russell Lowell's satirical verses as the conflict's most enduring voice. Lawson argues that America has not yet come to terms with what the war revealed about national character, and he calls on future writers to grapple with its political and moral complexities. As a primary document of American literary criticism, this essay offers a fascinating window into how late-19th-century intellectuals understood their nation's formative conflicts. For scholars of American literature, the Mexican-American War, or the formation of literary canons, Lawson's frustration remains oddly moving: a cry for literature equal to history's darker chapters.
