Erb

Erb is Herbert Barnes, a London carman who discovers he can move crowds with words. In the parks and street corners of early 1900s London, this working-classagitator finds his voice as a Socialist speaker, championing labor rights while navigating his own tangled ambitions and insecurities. W. Pett Ridge captures something rare: the authentic speech and manners of Bermondsey, rendered without condescension or sentimentality. Erb is vulgar, quick-witted, pathetically proud of his small advancements, and defiantly ill-at-ease among his social betters. Yet he possesses genuine intelligence and a code of honor that elevates him beyond mere caricature. His sister Louisa, a sharp-tongued factory girl, provides fiercely loyal counterpoint to his journey toward respectability. The novel traces Erb's evolution as he hones his oratory, cultivates the aspiration of his h's under a charming elocution teacher who becomes his wife, and transforms from a swaggering agitator into something gentler but no less determined. Ridge writes with comic precision about the harmless vanities and touching pride of working-class London, capturing a world where a man's worth is constantly measured and negotiated.
