Erasmus

Erasmus was the conscience of the Renaissance: a scholar who wielded satire like a blade against the corruption of the Church while remaining faithfully Catholic, a man who edited Greek texts that would eventually seed the Reformation but refused to break with Rome. R. C. Jebb's biography captures this essential tension in Erasmus's life, the radical intellect housed in a cautious soul. We follow Erasmus from his humble Dutch origins through his monastic education, his escape to Paris, and his emergence as the most celebrated scholar in Europe, lionized by kings and sought by reformers alike. Jebb particularly excels at tracing how Erasmus's wit, honed in "In Praise of Folly," became a force that reshaped intellectual life across the continent. This is a portrait of the scholar as provocateur: funny, furious, and forever caught between reform and tradition. For readers interested in the intellectual origins of modern thought, or in understanding how one man used learning to challenge the world without ever quite overturning it, Jebb's biography remains essential reading.
