English Economic History: Select Documents

This is a door into the past, unlocked by the voices of the people who lived it. Spanning nearly eight centuries of English economic life, this collection gathers the raw documents that historians actually use: wage records, trade agreements, petitions, statutes, and testimonies from peasants, merchants, and parliamentarians. Here, we encounter the stark arithmetic of survival: what a laborer earned, what bread cost, how much a farmer owed his lord. The documents trace the slow transformation of England from a feudal economy bound by custom and obligation to the turbulent market society of the nineteenth century. We witness the grinding pressures on ordinary people, the attempts at regulation, the consequences of enclosure and industrialization. The editors, writing in 1914 on the eve of a world war that would reshape everything, selected sources that illuminate the fundamental question of how people lived and labored. This is not synthesized history. It is the unfiltered evidence itself. For students of economic history, for anyone curious about the material foundations of society, these documents speak across centuries with startling immediacy.
