Eminent Victorians

Lytton Strachey's groundbreaking *Eminent Victorians* skewers four giants of the Victorian era: Cardinal Manning, the iron-willed cleric; Florence Nightingale, the formidable founder of modern nursing; Thomas Arnold, the architect of the English public school system; and General Gordon, the enigmatic military hero. Far from hagiographies, these incisive portraits peel back layers of veneration to reveal the very human flaws, contradictions, and often absurd motivations beneath the saintly façades. Strachey’s wit is a scalpel, dissecting the carefully constructed myths surrounding these figures, exposing their ambition, ruthlessness, and the often-unintended consequences of their grand endeavors, all while subtly questioning the moral certitudes of an entire age.
