Elizabeth Gilbert and Her Work for the Blind

In the 1880s, when blind people were routinely deemed uneducable and shut away from society, one woman refused to accept that fate - not just for herself, but for every blind person in America. This intimate account, written by someone who knew Elizabeth Gilbert personally, traces the remarkable life of a woman who lost her sight to scarlet fever as a child. Her father's radical decision to raise her like any of his other children - refusing to coddle or constrain her - became the foundation for her fierce independence. What unfolds is the story of her transformation from a determined young girl into a pioneering advocate who fought against societal prejudices and established educational and vocational resources for blind people. This is historical testimony from an era when most blind individuals were dismissed as incapable, a window into one woman's insistence on dignity and possibility for herself and her community.
