Elfin Songs of Sunland

Sun-drenched California childhood, rendered in verse. Published in 1904, Elfin Songs of Sunland captures a vanished era of afternoon light, climbing trees, and the particular magic of the Pacific coast landscape seen through children's eyes. Charles Keeler's collection moves from the active play of "A Ring Around of Playtime", where kites soar and corn pops in rattling pans, into the wildwood where birds speak and flowers listen, then pivots to playful nonsense rhymes and gentler lullabies for the youngest readers. The final section, "Brown Baby Ballads," offers glimpses of children across cultures, a remarkably inclusive gesture for its era. Keeler writes without condescension; his rhythms have bounce, his images have actual color. The book endures because it distills something true about childhood's wonder before the world grows complicated, those hours when the backyard was infinite and the wind through the eucalyptus trees sounded almost like speech.
