Edgar Saltus: The Man

Marie Saltus knew her husband better than anyone, and in this intimate biographical account she renders him with the kind of unflinching honesty that only love permits. Edgar Saltus was the author of Imperial Purple, the notorious 1892 novel that turned ancient Roman decadence into something so vivid readers swore they could smell the incense and blood. But this book is not about the fiction. It is about the man who wrote it: a restless, contradictory spirit caught between his desires and the expectations of a society that never quite knew what to do with him. Marie traces his tumultuous upbringing, his complicated relationships with his mother and two wives, and the psychological turbulence that both fueled and fractured his creative genius. The result is not a monument but a portrait in chiaroscuro, light and shadow intermixed. For anyone curious about the flesh-and-blood minds behind the books they love, this offers an uncommon glimpse into a literary life lived at full intensity.
