Eastern Stories and Legends

Some stories have outlived empires. The Jataka tales collected here are among the oldest continuous narratives in human history, Buddhist fables that predated Christianity by centuries and have been told in villages, monasteries, and courts across Asia for over two millennia. T.W. Rhys Davids, one of the great scholars of Pali literature, brings these ancient moral parables to English readers in a collection that mixes animal fables with human dramas, each tale a small jewel of wisdom about the consequences of our choices. The stories feature kings and peasants, wise animals and foolish ones, always circling back to the same quiet truths: that compassion outlasts cruelty, that wisdom is earned through patience, and that what we do reverberates beyond our knowing. The hare who panics at his own shadow and sets the forest ablaze with fear is both hilarious and instructive. These are not children's picture-book morals, but something more enduring: stories that ask what kind of person you want to become, and then show you the cost of every answer. They endure because human nature hasn't changed.
